A small corner of the internet for stories that stay with us.

The WhatsApp Messages

25 August 2026 2 min read

A story of a mother, a son, and the home that held them after loss.

I've watched this family for years. I know love doesn't always sound like "I love you." Sometimes... it arrives with a green WhatsApp notification.

Every morning before leaving for college, Arjun's phone would buzz. "Drink enough water." "Don't skip breakfast." "Read this Hanuman Chalisa once." "This doctor says sitting too much is dangerous."

He never really read them. Sometimes he replied with 👍. Mostly... he just swiped them away. College had lectures. Friends had plans. Life was happening elsewhere.

Ever since his father left, after those long years of hospitals, I've seen this home become quieter. The WhatsApp messages became louder. Not in sound... In meaning.

She wasn't forwarding health tips. She was forwarding the only thing she still knew how to give him... A little protection before he stepped out of my door.

Arjun knew she worried. He even smiled at some messages. But he was nineteen. At nineteen, you think mothers will always have another message waiting tomorrow morning.

I hope they do. Because I've seen homes like me. One day... the phone stops buzzing. And that's when people begin searching for messages they once never had time to read.

Stories live in the little things. I just put them into words.

A note from Arjun

Some mothers say “I love you.”

Some say, “Khana kha liya?”

And some forward you WhatsApp messages about drinking enough water, eating on time, saying a prayer, or some health tip they genuinely believe could make your life a little better.

And we?

We reply with a 👍.

Sometimes we don't even open them.

Not because we don't love them.

We're just busy living our lives.

I wish I could say this story came from something I observed.

It didn't.

It's a reality I've lived.

And somehow, I feel many of us have lived some version of it too.

We've all been too busy for a message that took our mother two seconds to forward...

without realising that perhaps those two seconds were her way of saying . . .

I'm thinking about you.

Take care of yourself.

I'm still here.

That's where The WhatsApp Messages came from.

A little story about a mother who keeps sending.

A son who casually keeps swiping them away.

And a home that has watched them long enough to understand the love hidden between the two.

Because mothers have strange little ways of loving us.

And sometimes...

we understand those ways much later than we should. ❤️

If you've lived this story too, go check your WhatsApp.

Maybe there's a message waiting. ❤️
