The Phone Call She Never Made
There are two versions of Divya. One lives in a beautiful house in San Francisco. The other still sits on the terrace of her parents' home in India... laughing with her father over evening tea.
Divya was the university topper. A researcher. The girl professors said, "You'll go places." She did. Just not to the place she imagined.
She fell in love with Neeraj. Against everyone's advice. Her father asked only once, "Are you sure this is the life you want?" She smiled. She had never been more certain.
Years later... Neeraj is still a good man. He doesn't drink. He doesn't shout. He doesn't betray her. He simply belongs more to his work than to his home.
Twelve-hour workdays. Weekend meetings. Late-night calls. Every promotion promised that life would get better. It never seemed to arrive.
The house is everything they once dreamed of. Large windows. Wooden floors. A backyard no one sits in. Some homes are so big... they make loneliness echo.
Divya gave up her research career to begin a new life. She thought she was choosing love. She never imagined she'd also be choosing silence. Days now pass without a real conversation.
Many evenings, she opens her father's contact. Her thumb hovers over the call button. Then she locks the phone. What would she say? "You were right?" Some sentences are heavier than tears.
Sometimes she imagines another life. A modest apartment in India. A different husband. Weekend lunches with her parents. Arguments over tea. Her father's familiar knock on the door. Nothing extraordinary. Everything she now misses.
The strange thing about the lives we almost lived is that they always feel warmer. Perhaps because memory edits out the difficult parts... leaving only what the heart longs for.
One evening... Neeraj came home early. He found Divya watching the rain. He hugged her from behind. "I know I haven't been around much." She closed her eyes. It was the longest conversation they'd had in months. For a moment... he felt like the man she had fallen in love with. Then his phone rang. And he walked away.
Divya still loves him. That has never been the problem. The problem is... she sometimes misses the daughter she used to be. Because somewhere... there is another Divya... who still walks into her parents' home, without needing a reason.
Some lives aren't lost. They're simply never lived.
A note from Arjun
What happens when you get the life you chose…
and still find yourself thinking about the one you didn’t?
Divya chose love.
And years later, she still loves the man she chose.
But somewhere between a career left behind, a home thousands of miles away, a father she no longer knows how to call, and a marriage slowly filling with silence… she began wondering about another Divya.
The one who stayed.
The one who continued her research.
The one who still had evening tea with her father.
The one who made a different choice.
Maybe that’s the strange thing about life.
We don't always regret the choices we make.
Sometimes, we simply grieve the choices we didn't.
And perhaps both feelings can exist together.
You can love the life you have…
and occasionally wonder about the life you almost lived.
Do you ever think about yours?
Thank you for reading. ♡
